Stoke-in-Teignhead is a village on narrow lanes between Torquay and the Teign estuary, near Shaldon and Teignmouth. Few places make you rely on your car as much, and a car that will not cool down on a warm day soon becomes a nuisance.

Our garage is at Longcombe Cross near Totnes. Drivers from the countryside and from nearby Teignmouth, St Marychurch, Newton Abbot and Milber come to Automaster for petrol and diesel car air con re-gas, on all makes and models.

Is my car air con still working properly?

Air con rarely fails in one go. Check it before the weather turns by switching it on and noticing how the cabin feels after a few minutes. If you spot any of these signs, a re-gas is worth asking about.

  • The air coming out is not cold
  • The cabin is slow to cool down
  • There is a musty smell when the fan runs
  • The compressor makes a noise

What happens during a car air con recharge?

The Automaster re-gas has four stages. The old gas is removed first. The system is then vacuumed and checked for leaks. Oil and dye are added next, and finally the new gas goes in and the temperature is checked.

The aim is simple: when summer arrives and you press the button, the air con does its job.

What is the difference between R134a and R1234yf, and what do they cost?

R134a is the older refrigerant. R1234yf is the newer gas used in more recent cars, typically from around 2017 onward, though you should check your own vehicle. You cannot swap one for the other.

As a guide, a re-gas is from £50 for R134a and from £99 for R1234yf. To see which applies, look for the label under the bonnet or read your handbook.

Do I need to book, or can I drive over to Totnes and wait?

For R134a you do not need to book. Just turn up at Longcombe Cross and wait while we work, which suits a village diary where there may not be a spare car at home.

The turn-up option is for R134a only. If your car uses R1234yf, ask for a quote before you set off.

Questions about air con re-gas in Stoke-in-Teignhead

Why does my air con get weaker over time?

Systems lose refrigerant very slowly, even when nothing is wrong. The loss builds up gradually until the air no longer feels cold.

Is a leak check really necessary?

Yes. A re-gas on a badly leaking system will not last, so the vacuum and leak check is built into the service before new gas is added.

Does running the air con in winter help?

Running it regularly all year round is a good habit. It keeps the system in use rather than sitting idle for months.

How do I ask for a quote?
