What is a car air con recharge and what does it involve?

A recharge, or re-gas, restores the refrigerant your system needs. Ours has four steps: old gas removal, vacuum and leak check, oil and dye, then new gas with a temperature check.

Each step is there for a reason, and the leak check in particular tells you whether the system is sound enough to hold new gas.

People use recharge, re-gas and top-up to mean the same thing, and we are happy with any of them. What matters is that the old gas comes out and the system is checked before new gas goes back in.

How much is a re-gas, and does the gas matter?

It does. Re-gas costs from £50 for R134a, and from £99 for R1234yf, the newer gas.

Is there a while-you-wait option?

For R134a cars there is. No booking is needed, so you turn up and wait while the re-gas is done. It is for R134a only.

If your car has R1234yf, get a quote first.

Many people appreciate being able to drop in during a run into town, and the turn-up service makes that possible for older cars. It keeps things simple when you only need the air con sorted.

Which gas is in my car, and what are the warning signs?

R134a is the older refrigerant. R1234yf is the newer gas on more recent cars, typically from around 2017 onward, but check the label under the bonnet or the handbook, since the two are not interchangeable.

Watch for air that is not cold, slow cooling, a musty smell and compressor noise. Gas escapes slowly over time, and a badly leaking system will not keep a fresh charge, so the leak check matters. Running the air con regularly all year helps too.
