South Knighton is a small rural hamlet on country lanes in the Newton Abbot area. Driving those lanes with the windows shut and warm air blowing is nobody's idea of fun.

Automaster, trading as Clutchmaster at Automaster, has full facilities for air con re-gas on all makes and models. Expect a price from £50 for R134a, or from £99 for R1234yf gas.

How does an air con re-gas work step by step?

We go through the system in order. First the old gas is removed, then the system is vacuumed and checked for leaks, next oil and dye are added, and finally new gas goes in and the temperature is checked.

That sequence is why a re-gas is more than a quick top-up.

It is worth knowing the order because it explains the work. Taking the old gas out and vacuuming comes before anything new goes in.

What is the difference between R134a and R1234yf gas?

Think of R134a as the older refrigerant and R1234yf as the newer one fitted to more recent cars, typically from around 2017 onward. The label under your bonnet or the handbook shows which your car has.

They are not interchangeable, so the right gas matters. On price, an R134a re-gas is from £50 for R134a and an R1234yf re-gas is from £99 for R1234yf.

Can I wait while my car is re-gassed?

If your car uses R134a, yes. No booking is needed and you can turn up and wait. The while-you-wait option applies to R134a only.

For anything newer that takes R1234yf, send in a quote request so we can sort out the details for you.

This suits a busy day: bring the car, wait, and drive away with cooler air, at least where the car runs on R134a.

Is my air con telling me it needs attention?

Warning signs include air that is not cold, slow cooling, a musty smell and compressor noise. None of them mean disaster, but they do mean the system deserves a look.

A system with a serious leak will not hold new gas for long, which is exactly why the leak check forms part of our service.

Do not ignore a small change. Cool air that takes longer than it used to is often the first hint, long before the system stops cooling altogether.

  • Air not cold
  • Slow to cool the cabin
  • Musty smell from the vents
  • Noise from the compressor

Questions about air con re-gas in South Knighton

Does the re-gas fix leaks?

The vacuum and leak check shows whether the system is holding up, but we cannot promise a leak can be fixed. A badly leaking system will not keep new gas for long.

How can I look after my air con?

Run it regularly all year round, not just in summer. This keeps the system in use.

Which cars can you re-gas?

All makes and models of petrol and diesel vehicle, using R134a or R1234yf gas as appropriate.
