What does a failing clutch feel like?

What does fitting a new clutch include?

We fit a new pressure plate, driven plate and release bearing together, since they are all accessed by taking out the gearbox. Flywheel condition is checked each time. Where it is a dual-mass flywheel and it has worn, replacing it avoids the new clutch suffering the same fault.

The release bearing and the pressure plate diaphragm spring both wear in ways you cannot see, which is why we replace them as part of the kit. Reusing them with a new driven plate would put the job at risk of repeating.

When is a repair enough?

If the clutch itself is healthy, the problem may be a slave or master cylinder, a leaking pipe or air in the hydraulics, or a cable on an older car. Those jobs are usually smaller than a full replacement. We check before advising, because pedal symptoms alone can be ambiguous.

Sometimes a clutch that seems fine on the A38 shows its faults only in the village, pulling away slowly. That low-speed judder is worth reporting, even if it comes and goes.
