Look out for air that is warm or only mildly cool, a long wait before the cabin cools down, a musty smell, or a noisy compressor. Gas escapes slowly from most systems as the years go by, so the change can be gradual.

If you have not run your air con for a while, try it now rather than waiting for the heat. Finding out early beats a surprise on the first hot day.

Which gas is in my car?

The older gas is R134a. The newer one, R1234yf, is fitted to more recent cars, typically from around 2017 onward. Your handbook or a label under the bonnet will say, and the two cannot be swapped.
