Air Con Re-gas in Paignton
A Paignton guide to car air con re-gas: which gas, what it costs and how the service works at Automaster.
Air con re-gas prices
- Removal of old gas
- System vacuumed and checked for leaks
- Oil and dye added to system
- New gas added and temperature checked

A seafront with a pier, a harbour and a zoo draws a steady stream of visitors to Paignton, and a car full of passengers in traffic is no place to find out that the air con has stopped working.
Automaster is a RAC Approved Garage at Longcombe Cross near Totnes, trading as Clutchmaster at Automaster. We offer a full air con re-gas on every make and model of petrol and diesel car, priced from £50 for R134a and from £99 for R1234yf.
What is included when you re-gas a car's air con?
There are four parts to it. The old gas is taken out, the system is vacuumed and checked for leaks, oil and dye are added, and then new gas goes in and the temperature is checked.
Each stage has a purpose. The vacuum clears the system, the dye helps show up leaks, and the final temperature check shows the result.
Think of it as a reset for the system. Nothing is guessed, because each stage leads naturally into the next, from clearing the old gas out to checking the temperature at the end.
How much does a Paignton air con recharge cost?
Cars on the older R134a gas are from £50 for R134a. Cars on the newer R1234yf gas are from £99 for R1234yf. Which one applies depends on the car, not on our preference.
Not sure? The label under the bonnet or your handbook will say, and R1234yf is typically found on cars from around 2017 onward.
Automaster keeps the pricing simple on purpose. There are two gases, two starting prices, and a quote available if you want the exact figure for your car.
Can I turn up without booking?
If your car uses R134a, yes. It is a while-you-wait service with no booking needed, which suits a busy week of seafront errands.
R1234yf is different, so call the quote line or use the quote form for that one.
Plenty of Paignton drivers would rather not leave the car for the day, which is where the while-you-wait option for R134a is useful.
Why does my air con smell or blow warm?
Warm air, slow cooling, a musty smell and compressor noise are the classic signs. Air con systems lose gas slowly, so cooling fades gradually rather than failing overnight.
A badly leaking system will not keep a fresh charge, which is why the leak check is built into the service. Running the system regularly all year helps too.
Do not ignore a musty smell. It is one of the signs listed here, and it is worth having looked at along with how cold the air actually gets.
- Warm air from vents
- Slow to cool
- Musty smell
- Noisy compressor
