As a market town at the head of the Teign estuary, Newton Abbot sits among busy A380 and A382 junctions, and it is a gateway to Dartmoor and Torbay. That is a lot of driving, often with the windows shut and the air con on, so a system that works properly is not a luxury for local drivers.

Automaster, an RAC Approved Garage, works on petrol and diesel cars of all makes and models. Our base is Longcombe Cross near Totnes, and drivers from Newton Abbot, Milber, Abbotskerswell, Bickington and Heathfield make the trip to us.

When should I get my car air con checked?

Do it before you need it. Switch the system on now and see how quickly the air turns cold. If it does not, a re-gas may be due. Spotting the problem early means you are not caught out on the first hot day of the year.

  • Warm air from the vents
  • A cabin that is slow to cool
  • A musty smell
  • A noisy compressor

What does our air con re-gas involve?

Four things happen in order. The old gas comes out, then the system is vacuumed and checked for leaks. Oil and dye go in, and then we add new gas and check the temperature.

It is aimed at making sure your air con works when you switch it on, and you are ready for summer. Dye and oil in the system are there for a reason, and the leak check comes before the new gas.

What are the prices for R134a and R1234yf re-gas?

For the older R134a gas, a re-gas is from £50 for R134a. For the newer gas used in more recent cars, it is from £99 for R1234yf.

Cars from around 2017 onward often use R1234yf, but check yours. The gases do not mix, and the label under the bonnet or the handbook will tell you which is right.

Is there a turn-up service for R134a?

There is. If your car takes R134a, you do not need to book. Come to the garage and wait while the work is done, which fits neatly around a trip out of town for the morning.

R1234yf is different, so please ask for a quote first.

Questions about air con re-gas in Newton Abbot

Why would my air con need more gas?

Refrigerant leaks away slowly from nearly all systems over time. When levels drop, the air stops feeling cold.

Will a re-gas fix a leaking system?

Not if the leak is bad, because the new gas would not last. That is why we vacuum the system and check for leaks as part of the re-gas.

Is there anything I can do between services?

Run your air con regularly all year round. Occasional use through the winter is better than leaving it off for months.

Can I ask about a quote before visiting?

Of course. Use the quote form or call the quote line, and tell us about your car.
