Advice: Car Diagnostics

Intermittent Electrical Faults Explained

Electrical faults that come and go are frustrating, but they usually trace back to a loose connection, damaged wiring, moisture or a failing component.

Intermittent faults are hard because the car often behaves perfectly when you take it to be checked. The usual causes are a poor connection, a wire that has chafed or broken inside its insulation, water getting into a connector, or a component that fails only when hot or cold.

The most useful thing you can bring a garage is a description of exactly when the fault happens. Without that, testing can come back clear and the problem returns the next week.

Why does my car have a fault that comes and goes?

Modern cars are full of connectors, sensors and control units linked by wiring. A terminal that has loosened or corroded can make contact one moment and lose it the next, especially when the car vibrates over rough roads.

Heat and cold matter too. Metal expands and contracts, so a cracked solder joint or a worn contact may work when warm and fail when cold, or the other way round. That is why faults often appear only on certain mornings or after a long drive.

What are the most common causes of intermittent electrical problems?

Some causes turn up far more often than others, and a good diagnostic process works through them in a sensible order.

  • Corroded or loose battery terminals and earth points
  • Damaged or chafed wiring, often where it flexes
  • Water or damp inside connectors and switches
  • Worn switches, relays or sensors
  • A battery or alternator that is not holding steady voltage

How can I record the problem to help the garage?

Keep a short note of what happened, what the weather was like, whether the engine was hot or cold, and what else was switched on. If it is safe and someone else is in the car, a quick phone video of a warning light or a flickering display can be very helpful.

Also note any other symptoms around the same time, such as a slow start, dim lights or a radio that resets. A pattern often points straight to the circuit involved.

How does a garage track down a fault that will not show itself?

We begin by reading stored fault codes, because many control units log a fault even after it clears. Then we test the battery and charging voltage, check the connectors and wiring involved and look at the live data from the sensors.

Where the fault is intermittent, the work may involve moving wiring while monitoring a circuit, or testing under the conditions you described. This can take longer than a straightforward fault, and the time needed is the main driver of cost. We cannot promise to find it on the first visit, but a clear history gives us a good chance of success.

When is it unsafe to carry on driving?

Stop if the fault affects lighting, power steering, braking warnings or causes the engine to cut out. A car that stalls at junctions or loses its lights is a danger to you and others.

A fault that only affects something minor, such as a window or a radio, can usually wait for an appointment. If you are unsure, treat anything affecting safety systems as urgent and check your handbook for what a warning light means.

Write down the pattern and bring it with you. Automaster, at Longcombe Cross near Totnes, can look at an intermittent fault, and you can ask for a quote before booking.

Common questions

Why does the fault not show on the diagnostic scan?

A scan only reads faults the control unit has logged. Wiring and connection problems often leave no code, so testing the circuit itself is needed to find them.

Can a weak battery cause strange electrical faults?

Yes. Low or unstable voltage can make warning lights appear, systems reset and sensors give odd readings. Checking the battery and charging system is often the first step.

Will the problem fix itself?

Rarely. Intermittent faults usually become more frequent as the connection or component deteriorates, so it is better to have it looked at early.

What should I tell the garage when I book?

Tell us what you see, when it happens, whether the car is hot or cold, and if it follows rain or a bumpy road. Photos or video of the symptom are very useful.
