Immobiliser and Key Problems: Why Your Car Won't Recognise the Key

When the immobiliser does not recognise your key, the engine will not run, and the cause may be the key, the reader or the car's control unit.

Picture the scene: you turn the key, the engine cranks or does nothing, and a little car-shaped light with a key or padlock keeps flashing on the dashboard. That is the immobiliser telling you it has not accepted the key.

Most of the time the cause is simple, such as a flat battery in the key, but sometimes it is a fault that needs proper testing. This guide explains what to try and when to get help.

What does the immobiliser light mean?

The immobiliser is an anti-theft system. A chip in the key sends a coded signal to a reader around the ignition or start button, and the engine control unit will only allow the car to run if the code matches.

A light that flashes slowly when the car is locked is normal, since it shows the system is armed. A light that stays on or flashes quickly when you try to start usually means the code has not been accepted.

Why will my car not recognise my key?

The most common causes are listed below. Some of them are cheap to deal with and some need specialist equipment.

  • Flat battery in the key fob or smart key
  • Damaged key, or a cracked or worn transponder chip
  • A faulty reader coil around the ignition barrel
  • Interference from other keys or fobs on the same ring
  • A fault in the immobiliser or engine control unit
  • A low car battery, which can upset the system

What can I try at home?

Start with the spare key. If the car starts with it, the first key is the problem. Remove any other keys and fobs from the ring, and keep metal objects away from the ignition area, as they can interfere with the signal.

If your car has a key fob battery, replace it using the type shown in your handbook. Some cars have a particular way to start with a flat fob, such as holding it close to a marked spot, so it is worth checking your handbook.

How does a garage diagnose immobiliser and key faults?

We connect diagnostic equipment to read stored fault codes from the immobiliser and engine control unit, check whether the key is being detected, and test the car battery and wiring. That tells us whether the key, the reader or the control unit is at fault.

Whether a key can be replaced or programmed depends on the make, model and age of the vehicle, and some work needs the original keys or proof of ownership. Cost depends on which part is involved and how the car is secured, so please ask for a quote with your registration and details of what happens.

Should I keep trying, and is it safe to drive?

Do not keep forcing the key or repeatedly cranking. If the car starts but then cuts out after a second or two, the immobiliser may be shutting it down, and that is not a fault to ignore.

If the car starts and drives normally after a restart, do not assume the problem has gone. A key that works only some of the time is likely to fail completely, often at the worst moment, so it is wise to have it checked before it strands you.

Try the spare key and a new key battery first. If the light still flashes, Automaster at Longcombe Cross near Totnes can diagnose it, and you can ask for a quote.

Common questions

Why does my car start and then cut out?

This can be the immobiliser shutting the engine down because the key code was not accepted. It can also be a fuel or sensor fault, so a diagnostic check is needed to tell them apart.

Can I get a spare key cut and programmed?

Often yes, but it depends on the vehicle and the security system. Ask for a quote and tell us the make, model and year.

Can a flat car battery cause key problems?

Yes. Low voltage can stop the reader and control units working properly, so the key may not be recognised even if it is perfectly fine.

Is it safe to bypass the immobiliser?

No. It would remove a key anti-theft protection and may affect your insurance. The right approach is to find and fix the fault.
