Driving around Kingston means narrow, high-hedged lanes where you change gear constantly: down for a blind bend, up again on the straight, down once more for a passing place. That makes a gearbox problem hard to ignore. A shift that was smooth last month now crunches, or the lever feels stiff and notchy, and every lane becomes a small ordeal.

At Automaster, our garage at Longcombe Cross near Totnes, we repair manual gearboxes and the parts that carry power to the wheels: gearbox servicing, replacement, differentials, CV joints and driveshafts.

What does gearbox noise mean on a lane-heavy commute?

A whine that rises and falls with road speed, rather than engine speed, often points to worn bearings or gears inside the box. A graunching or crunching sound as you select a gear can mean worn synchromesh, low or tired gearbox oil, or a fault in the linkage. Humming in one particular gear usually tells us which set of gears is worn.

Note which gear it happens in and whether it changes when the car is hot or cold. That detail helps us a great deal.

  • Whining that follows road speed
  • Crunching when selecting a gear
  • Humming in one gear only
  • Gearbox oil marks under the car

Why does my car jump out of gear?

Jumping out of gear, usually under load or on the overrun, is a classic sign of wear inside a manual gearbox, such as worn selector parts, tired synchro hubs or worn gear teeth. A loose or worn engine or gearbox mounting can add to the problem, so we look at the whole drivetrain rather than assuming.

If the car pops out of gear it can be unsafe, particularly on a hill or when pulling out of a junction. Please do not keep driving it hard in that condition; book it in for inspection.

Is it the gearbox or just a worn clutch?

A worn clutch can mimic gearbox trouble. A clutch that does not fully release makes gears hard to select and causes crunching, while a slipping clutch can feel like a loss of drive. A dragging release mechanism or air in a hydraulic system can do the same.

This is why diagnosis comes first at Automaster.

Repair, service or replacement: what will my gearbox need?

Some faults are modest. Fresh oil of the correct specification, a seal for a leak, or attention to a linkage or cable can restore a smooth shift. Others need the gearbox removed and opened, and in some cases a replacement unit makes more sense than a repair. Which route suits you depends on the vehicle, the damage found and how the parts supply looks for that model.

What drives the price is mainly labour time to remove and refit the gearbox, the parts needed, and whether a clutch or flywheel should be renewed while access is open. We explain the options in plain words and you can ask for a quote before agreeing to anything.

Do you cover Kingston, and what about CV joints and driveshafts?

Yes. We welcome drivers from Kingston and the surrounding South Hams coast. Our garage is at Longcombe Cross, Longcombe, Totnes TQ9 6PL, and customers arrive from the villages and countryside nearby.

CV joints are worth a mention because tight lanes mean plenty of full-lock turns. A rhythmic clicking when you turn sharply points to a worn outer CV joint, often after a torn rubber boot lets grease out and grit in. Vibration under acceleration can point to an inner joint or driveshaft. We also repair differentials, which hum or whine when worn.

If your gearbox, CV joints or driveshafts are giving you trouble on the Kingston lanes, ask Automaster for a quote and we will diagnose before we recommend anything.

Questions about gearbox repairs in Kingston

How do I know if my gearbox needs repair?

Look for whining, crunching, jumping out of gear, a stiff or notchy shift or oil leaks. Any of these deserves an inspection. Ask for a quote once we have found the cause.

Can you tell a clutch problem from a gearbox problem?

Yes, that is the first thing we check. The clutch, its hydraulics and the gearbox all produce similar symptoms, so we test each before recommending work.

What is that clicking when I turn the steering fully?

That is usually a worn outer CV joint, often caused by a split boot. Left alone it can fail completely, so have it looked at soon.

What should I tell you when I ask for a quote?

Give us the make, model, engine and year, plus the symptoms, the gears affected and when they happen. A photo of any leak helps too.
