Advice: Car Servicing

What Is a Vehicle Health Check?

A vehicle health check is a quick inspection of key safety and wear items, giving you a report on what is fine, what is wearing and what needs attention.

If you have ever been handed a sheet marked in green, amber and red after your car was looked over, that was a health check. It is a structured inspection rather than a repair, and its purpose is to tell you the condition of the car so you can plan any work.

A health check is not an MOT and not a full service, although it often forms part of one. Below, we explain what is usually looked at, how to read the result, and when it can save you money by catching problems early.

What does a vehicle health check cover?

The exact list depends on the garage, but a typical health check is mainly visual and covers the parts that affect safety and reliability. The technician looks for wear, damage, leaks and anything out of the ordinary.

Common items include:

  • Tyre tread depth, condition and pressures
  • Brake pads, discs and fluid level
  • Lights, wipers and washers
  • Battery condition and terminals
  • Suspension, steering and exhaust components

How is a health check different from a service?

A service replaces consumables such as oil and filters and works through the maker's schedule. A health check does not usually replace anything; it simply records the condition of the car and flags concerns.

That makes it a good option if you are not due a service but want reassurance, perhaps before a long trip, after buying a vehicle, or if something feels slightly off. It also suits drivers who simply want a second opinion on tyres and brakes without committing to a full service, since the findings are written down and can be compared at the next visit.

Is a health check the same as an MOT?

No. The MOT is a legal annual test with fixed pass and fail criteria, carried out on the day. A health check has no pass or fail and looks at wear that may not yet be bad enough to fail a test.

It can be useful as a pre-MOT look, because an amber item such as a worn tyre or tired brake pad can be dealt with before test day. It cannot replace the certificate, and a recent health check does not mean a pass is certain.

How do I read the results?

Many garages use a traffic light system. Green means no action needed now, amber means wear is developing and the item will need attention soon, and red means the item needs attention promptly, often for safety reasons.

You do not have to approve everything straight away. A good report lets you see what is urgent and what can wait, and you can ask for a quote on each item before deciding. If a red item involves brakes, steering or tyres, avoid driving the car until it has been dealt with.

Is a vehicle health check worth doing?

It can be, especially for older cars, high-mileage cars or ones used for long journeys. Catching a worn component early often means a smaller repair and avoids damage to related parts.

At Automaster, a garage at Longcombe Cross near Totnes, we carry out checks on petrol and diesel vehicles and explain findings in plain words. If you have a specific worry, tell us when you ask for a quote so we know where to look first.

A health check tells you where your car stands so you can fix what matters first. To arrange one, ask Automaster for a quote or call the quote line.

Common questions

Can a health check find every fault?

No. It is mainly visual and does not strip the car down, so hidden problems can be missed. Warning lights or specific symptoms may need a separate diagnostic check, and noises that only appear on the road are worth describing to the technician in as much detail as you can.

How often should I have one?

Many drivers have one with each service, or before a long journey or the MOT. There is no legal interval, so it depends on how you use the car.

Do I have to pay for repairs the check finds?

No. The check reports on condition, and you decide what to go ahead with. Ask for a quote for each item so you can compare priorities.

Is a health check useful when buying a car?

It can give you extra information about condition, but it is not a substitute for a full history check or an independent inspection of the specific car.
