Water pump failure: symptoms and causes

A failing water pump usually shows up as a coolant leak, an engine that runs hot or a whine from the front, and any of those needs attention quickly.

The water pump pushes coolant around the engine and radiator. When it stops doing that properly, the engine can overheat fast, which risks serious and expensive damage.

Here we cover what to look and listen for, why pumps fail, what is safe to check and what happens at the garage.

What are the symptoms of a bad water pump?

The signs depend on how the pump is failing. A leaking seal gives coolant drips or dried residue near the pump, usually at the front of the engine. A worn bearing gives a whining, groaning or grinding noise that changes with engine speed. A worn or damaged impeller means coolant is not moving well, so the temperature gauge climbs even though the level looks fine.

Steam from under the bonnet and a heater that blows cool air when the engine is hot can also point to a circulation problem.

  • Coolant puddle or crusty residue near the front of the engine
  • Temperature gauge rising above its usual position
  • Whining or grinding that follows engine speed
  • Steam from the bonnet
  • Low coolant level that keeps dropping

Why do water pumps fail?

Age and mileage are the usual reasons, as seals and bearings wear. Old or poor quality coolant can corrode internal parts, and coolant that has not been changed when due loses its protective properties. A loose or worn drive belt, or a tensioner problem, can also damage a pump driven by a belt.

On some engines the pump is driven by the timing belt, so a failed pump can seize and cause the belt to fail as well. That is one reason garages often replace the two together.

Can I check a water pump myself?

Only with the engine cold and switched off. Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine, as the system is under pressure and can scald. With the engine cool, look for leaks, check the level against the marks on the expansion tank, and look at the coolant colour. Rusty, oily or sludgy coolant needs a professional look.

You cannot fully test the pump at home. A garage can pressure test the system and check the pump for play and leaks.

Is it safe to drive with a failing water pump?

Not if the engine is running hot, the gauge is rising, a warning light shows, or you can see steam. Pull over safely, switch off and let it cool. Continuing to drive on a hot engine risks a blown head gasket or a warped cylinder head.

If you only see a small weep and the temperature is normal, it still needs checking soon. Keep an eye on the gauge and carry on only as far as needed to reach a garage.

What does a garage do to replace a water pump?

The system is drained, the pump is accessed and replaced, usually with a new gasket or seal, and the system is refilled and bled of air. If it is belt driven, the belt and related parts are generally changed at the same time. We then check for leaks and monitor the temperature.

Cost depends on how the pump is driven, how hard it is to reach and what related parts are due. Automaster is a garage at Longcombe Cross near Totnes, and we cannot confirm a diagnosis until the car is inspected, but you are welcome to ask for a quote.

Do not ignore a rising temperature gauge or a coolant leak. If you suspect the pump, ask for a quote and we will inspect it first.

Common questions

How long does a water pump last?

There is no single figure. It depends on the vehicle, how it is driven and how well the cooling system has been looked after. Your handbook may list a replacement point where the pump is part of the belt service.

Can I top up coolant and carry on?

Topping up cold can help in an emergency, but if coolant keeps disappearing there is a leak somewhere that needs finding. Use the coolant type your handbook specifies.

Is a leaking water pump the same as a leaking radiator?

No, though both lose coolant. The pump leak is usually at the front of the engine, while radiator leaks appear at the front of the car. A garage can pressure test to find the exact source.

Will the MOT fail for a water pump?

There is no specific water pump test, but a major leak of fluid can be a reason for failure, and an overheating car should not be driven.
