What does an oil and filter change actually do?

Engine oil lubricates, cools and cleans. Over time it thins, darkens and carries dirt, so it protects less. The filter catches the particles, but it fills up and needs replacing alongside the oil.

Skipping changes allows sludge and wear to build, and a worn engine is a much bigger job than a service. If your oil light comes on, do not carry on driving. Stop somewhere safe and get advice.

What is a vehicle health check, and what about a pre-purchase inspection?

A health check is a straightforward look at tyres, brakes, lights, fluids and other visible items, with a report on what is fine and what needs attention. It suits cars that are not yet due a service.

A pre-purchase inspection does a similar job for a second-hand vehicle you are considering. We look for leaks, uneven wear and signs of neglect, so you can negotiate on price or step away. It reduces risk but cannot rule out every future problem.
